The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) refer to the Kitchen Work Triangle Design Rule. This principle was established in the 1940s.

Does this still apply today?

Yes or No to Kitchen Work Triangle

Working within the triangle zone may have been the trend in the 1940s because of the efficiency and comfort it brings to kitchen users during that time, but according to Pedro Garcia, modern-day kitchens are now designed differently. It is now designed for zones. This includes the following working areas:

  1. Bench space for preparation
  2. Cooking area
  3. Storage
  4. Cleaning

Why the shift from a triangle working space to kitchen working zones?
The advent of modern kitchen appliances such as microwave, coffee machine, blender, food processor, toaster and refrigerator influenced how the modern kitchen looks. Thus, the focus of attention is not solely on the “cooking” anymore but the entire process.

The Birth of the Fifth Zone: The Kitchen as Social Hub

With this being said, the kitchen has further transformed itself from merely being a “tuck away cooking space” into a social hub of the home.

YES!

The kitchen has become one of the most popular, if not THE most popular place in the house. It is the favourite hang-out place of your kids, family, friends and guests. It’s now a place where kids can do their homework while they wait for dinner. It is also a place where your friends can sit and drink while you prepare something special for everyone to indulge with.

Conclusion

There is no single formula for the perfect kitchen. It all depends on how you plan to use this space for you and your family.
